Harry Truman Picture
and Biography

Harry Truman Picture

Harry Truman Picture - 33rd President.

During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia.

Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman's to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me."

Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, and for 12 years prospered as a Missouri farmer.

He went to France during World War I as a captain in the Field Artillery. Returning, he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, and opened a haberdashery in Kansas City.

Active in the Democratic Party, Truman was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court (an administrative position) in 1922. He became a Senator in 1934. During World War II he headed the Senate war investigating committee, checking into waste and corruption and saving perhaps as much as 15 billion dollars.

As President, Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in history. Soon after V-E Day, the war against Japan had reached its final stage. An urgent plea to Japan to surrender was rejected. Truman, after consultations with his advisers, ordered atomic bombs dropped on cities devoted to war work. Two were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japanese surrender quickly followed.

In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, hopefully established to preserve peace.

Thus far, he had followed his predecessor's policies, but he soon developed his own. He presented to Congress a 21-point program, proposing the expansion of Social Security, a full-employment program, a permanent Fair Employment Practices Act, and public housing and slum clearance.

The program, Truman wrote, "symbolizes for me my assumption of the office of President in my own right." It became known as the Fair Deal.

Dangers and crises marked the foreign scene as Truman campaigned successfully in 1948. In foreign affairs he was already providing his most effective leadership.

In 1947 as the Soviet Union pressured Turkey and, through guerrillas, threatened to take over Greece, he asked Congress to aid the two countries, enunciating the program that bears his name--the Truman Doctrine. The Marshall Plan, named for his Secretary of State, stimulated spectacular economic recovery in war-torn western Europe.

When the Russians blockaded the western sectors of Berlin in 1948, Truman created a massive airlift to supply Berliners until the Russians backed down. Meanwhile, he was negotiating a military alliance to protect Western nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, established in 1949.

In June 1950, when the Communist government of North Korea attacked South Korea, Truman conferred promptly with his military advisers. There was, he wrote, "complete, almost unspoken acceptance on the part of everyone that whatever had to be done to meet this aggression had to be done. There was no suggestion from anyone that either the United Nations or the United States could back away from it."

A long, discouraging struggle ensued as U.N. forces held a line above the old boundary of South Korea. Truman kept the war a limited one, rather than risk a major conflict with China and perhaps Russia.

Deciding not to run again, he retired to Independence; at age 88, he died December 26, 1972, after a stubborn fight for life.

Harry Truman was President from 1945 - 1953.

Henry Ford 1919 (July 30, 1863April 7, 1947) was the American founder of the Ford Motor Company and father of modern assembly lines used in mass production. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry. He was a prolific inventor and was awarded 161 U.S. patents. As owner of the Ford Company he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with "Fordism", that is, the mass production of large numbers of inexpensive automobiles using the assembly line, coupled with high wages for his workers. Ford had a global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace. Ford did not believe in accountants; he amassed one of the world's largest fortunes without ever having his company audited under his administration. Henry Ford's intense commitment to lowering costs resulted in many technical and business innovations, including a franchise system that put a dealership in every city in North America, and in major cities on six continents. Ford left most of his vast wealth to the Ford Foundation but arranged for his family to control the company permanently.

Gerald Ford was President from 1974 - 1977.

Gerald Ford Picture
and Biography

Gerald Ford Picture

Gerald Ford Picture - 38th President.

When Gerald R. Ford took the oath of office on August 9, 1974, he declared, "I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances.... This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts."

It was indeed an unprecedented time. He had been the first Vice President chosen under the terms of the Twenty-fifth Amendment and, in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, was succeeding the first President ever to resign.

Ford was confronted with almost insuperable tasks. There were the challenges of mastering inflation, reviving a depressed economy, solving chronic energy shortages, and trying to ensure world peace.

The President acted to curb the trend toward Government intervention and spending as a means of solving the problems of American society and the economy. In the long run, he believed, this shift would bring a better life for all Americans.

Ford's reputation for integrity and openness had made him popular during his 25 years in Congress. From 1965 to 1973, he was House Minority Leader. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He starred on the University of Michigan football team, then went to Yale, where he served as assistant coach while earning his law degree.

During World War II he attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy. After the war he returned to Grand Rapids, where he began the practice of law, and entered Republican politics. A few weeks before his election to Congress in 1948, he married Elizabeth Bloomer. They have four children: Michael, John, Steven, and Susan.

As President, Ford tried to calm earlier controversies by granting former President Nixon a full pardon. His nominee for Vice President, former Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York, was the second person to fill that office by appointment. Gradually, Ford selected a cabinet of his own.

Ford established his policies during his first year in office, despite opposition from a heavily Democratic Congress. His first goal was to curb inflation.

Then, when recession became the Nation's most serious domestic problem, he shifted to measures aimed at stimulating the economy. But, still fearing inflation, Ford vetoed a number of non-military appropriations bills that would have further increased the already heavy budgetary deficit. During his first 14 months as President he vetoed 39 measures. His vetoes were usually sustained.

Ford continued as he had in his Congressional days to view himself as "a moderate in domestic affairs, a conservative in fiscal affairs, and a dyed-in-the-wool internationalist in foreign affairs." A major goal was to help business operate more freely by reducing taxes upon it and easing the controls exercised by regulatory agencies. "We...declared our independence 200 years ago, and we are not about to lose it now to paper shufflers and computers," he said.

In foreign affairs Ford acted vigorously to maintain U. S. power and prestige after the collapse of Cambodia and South Viet Nam. Preventing a new war in the Middle East remained a major objective; by providing aid to both Israel and Egypt, the Ford Administration helped persuade the two countries to accept an interim truce agreement.

Detente with the Soviet Union continued. President Ford and Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev set new limitations upon nuclear weapons.

President Ford won the Republican nomination for the Presidency in 1976, but lost the election to his Democratic opponent, former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia.

On Inauguration Day, President Carter began his speech: "For myself and for our Nation, I want to thank my predecessor for all he has done to heal our land." A grateful people concurred.

Gerald Ford was President from 1974 - 1977.

Applications to intervene

In cases where a third state's interests are affected, that state may be permitted to intervene in the case, and participate as a full party. Under Article 62, a state "with an interest of a legal nature" may apply; however, it is within the Court's discretion whether or not to allow the intervention. Intervention applications are rare - the first successful application occurred in 1990.

Mumbai Blast Accused In India Hands

Abu Salem, Monica in Mumbai, to be produced in court

Abu Salem-Monica Bedi Lisbon, November 11: In the first major success in an extradition battle, CBI on Friday brought back one of India's most wanted terrorists Abu Salem, a prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts along with his girlfriend Monica Bedi, after a three-year legal process in Portugal.

Capping a three-week secretive operation, a team of 20 CBI and police officials headed by a Deputy Inspector General, brought the two from Lisbon in a chartered flight to Mumbai on Friday morning for trial in a host of cases including 25 alone in the commercial capital.

The extradition of Salem, who is also wanted in various cases including the murder of noted film producer Gulshan Kumar besides his role in the 1993 blasts masterminded by Dawood Ibrahim, comes after an assurance to Portugal that he would not be given death penalty, an important requirement in extradition proceedings in Europe.

Bollywood starlet Bedi, however, faces trial in connection with two cases of forgery of passport in Bhopal and Hyderabad. She had travelled on forged documents to stay with Salem in Lisbon in the last few years.

    Kalkaji Mandir, Delhi
  • Built in: 1764
  • Kalka Devi is known to be one of the incarnations of Goddess Shakti (Durga). Due to this renowned temple, the area came to be called as Kalkaji. The image of the Goddess Kalka is believed to a self-manifested one. The main shrine has twelve sides, made in white marble and granite tiles. In the early 20th century, the present structure was erected by the contributions and donations made by the devotees.

On religious occasions, Kalka Devi temple is thronged by innumerable devotees that come to have a glimpse of the Goddess. It is regarded that Kalka Devi fulfills all the legible wishes of her true devotees. During the time of 'Navratris' (Mar-Apr / Sep-Oct), thousands of devotees come for the 'darshan' of the deity. For the period of nine days, a huge fair is organized in the vicinity of the temple.

    Origin
Existent from past 3,000 years, Kalkaji Temple traces many legends regarding its origin. However, the oldest part of the shrine dates back to the 1764 A.D. Kalka Temple is said to have been constructed by the Maratha Rulers in the late 18th century. Kalkaji Mandir is believed to have been survived from the times of Mahabharata.

As per the folklore, the Pandavas and Kauravas had worshipped Kalka Devi during the reign of Yudhisthira.
  • Situated beyond the commercial complex of Nehru Place lies Kalkaji temple dedicated to the Goddess Kalka Devi. Kalkaji mandir is very famous and has numerous devotees thronging it on many religious occasions, throughout the year. Small red flags decorate the temple then, and women outnumber men among the devotees. Folklore is replete with tales of the Kalkaji temple, so much so that one does not know where legend ends and history begins.

This is a very old temple and the oldest part was built up in 1764 A.D. The Kali Temple in Kalkaji boasts of an existence of 3,000 years, although the oldest surviving portion of it dates to 1764-1771 when the Marathas were in power. Looking at the present-day Kalkaji temple one may find it hard to believe that this shrine to Kali is an antique one, where perhaps even the Pandavs and Kauravs had worshiped during the reign of Yudhisthir, whose citadel of Indraprastha had the fabled fairy gates of which bards sang, much like Homer of old, right up to the time of Prithviraj Chauhan.

The temple is situated on a hill and is dedicated to Kali. There is a very distinctive feeling there and the devotees are overwhelmed by light, which stay during the whole night. The power of Ma Kali is ambiguous but powerful. Devotees also try to meditate there and a spectacular tantric aarati is held at about 7 pm. The temple is also quite near to the Bahai Temple, which is just opposite on the other side of a big road.

  • The Kalka Devi temple or the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple is located alongside the Vivekananda Bridge in Calcutta around 20 km from the BBD Bagh. The temple was built by Rani Rashmoni in 1847 and is dedicated to goddess Kali. It was here that Rama Krishna Paramhansa achieved his spiritual awakening.

    [Kalka Devi Temple]

The temple has 12 spires and is placed in the centre of an enormous courtyard which is further surrounded by 12 temples where Lord Shiva is the deity. This temple is a world famous place of pilgrimage where thousands come from all over the world to worship the goddess.

The Dome of the Rock, (Arabic: مسجد قبة الصخرة, translit.: Masjid Qubbat As-Sakhrah, Hebrew: כיפת הסלע, translit.: Kipat Hasela, Turkish: Kubbetüs Sahra), is an Islamic shrine and a major landmark located on the Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem. It was completed in 691, making it the oldest extant Islamic building in the world.[1]

Exterior

The Dome is in the shape of a Byzantine martyrium, a structure intended for the housing and veneration of saintly relics, and is an excellent example of middle Byzantine art. al-Maqdisi reports that surplus funds consisting of 100,000 gold dinar coins were melted down and cast on the dome's exterior, “which at the time had a strong glitter that no eye could look straight at it.” [9] During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent the exterior of the Dome of the Rock was covered with Iznik tiles. The work took seven years. Haj Amin Al-Husseini, appointed Grand Mufti by the British, along with Yacoub Al Ghussein implemented restoration of Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

In 1955 an extensive program of renovation was begun by the government of Jordan, with funds supplied by the Arab governments and Turkey. The work included replacement of large numbers of tiles dating back to the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, which had become dislodged by heavy rain. In 1960, as part of this restoration, the dome was covered with a durable aluminium and bronze alloy made in Italy. The restoration was completed in August 1964. In 1998 the golden dome covering was refurbished following a donation of $8.2 million by King Hussein of Jordan who sold one of his houses in London to fund the 80 kilograms of gold

The PLO was considered "the richest of all terrorist organizations" with $8-$10 billion in assets and an annual income of $1.5-$2 billion from "donations, extortion, payoffs, illegal arms dealing, drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, etc.", according to a 1993 National Criminal Intelligence Service report. The Daily Telegraph reported in 1999 that the PLO had $50 billion in secret investments around the world.[4]

Interior

The interior of the dome is lavishly decorated with mosaic, faience and marble, much of which was added several centuries after its completion. It also contains Qur'anic inscriptions. sura Ya-Seen is inscribed across the top of the tile work and was commissioned in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent. al-Isra is inscribed above this.

According to Prof. Shlomo Dov Goitein, the inscriptions decorating the interior clearly display a spirit of polemic against Christianity, while stressing at the same time the Qur'anic doctrine that Jesus Christ was a true prophet. The formula la sharika lahu 'God has no companion' is repeated five times, the verses from sura Maryam 16:34-37, which strongly deny Jesus' sonship to God, are quoted together with the remarkable prayer: Allahumma salli (with ya; read salli without ya) ala rasulika wa'abdika 'Isa bin Maryam - "In the name of the One God (Allah) Pray for your Prophet and Servant Jesus son of Mary". He believes that this shows that rivalry with Christendom, together with the spirit of Islamic mission to the Christians, was at the work at the creation of the famous Dome. [6]

Geography

According to the Khalistan web-site:

The geographical boundaries of Khalistan will include current East Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, part of Rajasthan and small part of Uttar Pardesh. River Ravi on the west and river Jamuna on the east will be some of the boundary lines between Khalistan & Pakistan, Khalistan & India respectively. In the north, part of Himalayan range and in south, part of Thar Desert will make the geographical boundaries of Khalistan. [18]

This would still end up making the proposed region a Hindu majority by default.[19] Paramjit Singh Ajrawat states that Khalistan will be a theocratic state with a non-secular based fundamentalist constitution.

The flight disintegrated at altitude and the wreckage was scattered along a nine-mile swath of the ocean at 6,000 feet. The voice recorder showed there had been a loud bang aboard the aircraft. It also picked up the hissing sound of the fuselage opening up and a scream. The data recorders showed everything was normal on the aircraft until the explosion. The data recorder also showed a momentary control input by the pilot as he desperately tried to re-configure the aircraft. All 329 aboard were killed, including 60 children aged below 10. Also killed were 22 Americans, 160 Canadians and more than 100 Indian nationals along with others.

The Dome of the Rock illustrated Jewish religious works as early as the 16th century

The Dome of the Rock, being among a complex of buildings on the Temple Mount, (the other being the Al-Aqsa Mosque) is one of the holiest sites in Islam. Its significance stems from the religious beliefs regarding the rock at its heart. According to Islamic tradition, the rock is the spot from where Muhammad ascended to Heaven accompanied by the angel Gabriel. In Judaism the location of the stone is venerated as the holiest spot on Earth, the site of the Holy of Holies during the Temple Period. In Christianity it is believed that during the time of the Byzantine Empire, the spot where the Dome was later constructed was where Constantine's mother built a small church, calling it the Church of St. Cyrus and St. John, later on enlarged and called the Church of the Holy Wisdom.[17] On the walls of the Dome of the Rock is an inscription in a mosaic frieze that includes the following words:

Gallery

"Bless your envoy and your servant Jesus son of Mary and peace upon him on the day of birth and on the day of death and on the day he is raised up again. It is a word of truth in which they doubt. It is not for God to take a son. Glory be to him when he decrees a thing he only says be, and it is."[1]

Venkatapuram grieves for Paritala

TDP MLA PARITALA RAVINDER MURDERED

TDP MLA Paritala Ravinder Murdered

ANANTAPUR, JAN. 26. A pall of gloom descended on Venkatapuram, the tiny hamlet in Ramagiri mandal, 70 km from Anantapur, as the bullet-ridden body of the MLA, Paritala Ravidra, was brought home on Tuesday.

Thousands of mourners lined up at the palatial house of the leader.

Grieving villagers said their village might not be the same again. Mutyalappa, a farmer said he did not except any gifts from the leader but his royal stroll on the streets made all the difference.

Despite his hectic schedule, Mr. Ravidra made it a point to visit the village once a month, carefully examine every plant in his pomegranate orchard and work along with the servants.

Premonition of death

Mr. Ravidra's personal servants recalled that their master had a premonition that his end was near and advised them during his last visit to take care of the orchards saying his future was uncertain.

His close friends recalled that Mr. Ravindra, who was an atheist till a few years ago, turned to spirituality and yearned to quit murder politics. He built a Lord Venkateswara temple in the Ramagiri hill range close to the village. He pledged to perform marriages of 500 poor couples every year. Mr. Madanna, who knew Mr. Ravindra from childhood, recalled that he was mild and nobody expected him to follow the footsteps of his father, Sriramulu, and brother, Hari. But soon after entry into politics, he demonstrated exemplary organising skills and built a private empire.

Generosity

Mr. Ravidra grew in stature because of his generosity. He never had the habit of recollecting the money he lent to friends and people in the area. He enjoyed strong support from the weaker sections.

Some hoped that a new leader would emerge to inherit the legacy of Mr. Ravindra while others were doubtful about the continuation. 50 buses damaged in Anantapur district

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JAN. 24. There was a massive violent reaction to the gruesome killing of the Telugu Desam Party strongman and Penukonda legislator, Paritala Ravidra, in the district today.

As the news of Mr. Ravindra's murder spread the Telugu Desam Party activists came onto the roads and indulged in vandalism. As many as 150 vehicles, majority of them being Government vehicles, bore the burnt.

Fifty APSRTC buses and two KSRTC buses were either damaged or burnt by the violent mobs between Anantapur and Penukonda, Guntakal, Kalyanadurg, Kothacheruvu, Rayalacheruvu and several other places. The Government office jeeps were also targeted.

Several private vehicles and NH-7 had also fallen prey to the violent protesters.

House set on fire

In Anantapur, a mob attacked the house of Congress leader, Atmarami Reddy and set it on fire. The police had to fire six rounds into the air to disperse the mob. Fire tenders were rushed to put off the fire.

The TDP men attacked the house another Congress leader, Nanji Reddy, at Chennekothapalli, and set his house and tractor on fire. However nobody was attacked in the two incidents as the inmates had already fled.

Policeman injured

The mobs also attacked the police stations at Amarapuram and Mudigubba and ransacked them. The SI of Amarapuram, Srinivasulu, was injured in the attack.

At Puttaparthi, the mobs attacked the lodges belonging to Congress leaders and ransacked the offices of SUDA, Panchayat Raj, bus station, railway reservation counter and an ATM centre of Canara Bank.

Reports over the violent reaction to the TDP leader's killing were still pouring in.Hyderabad: A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former associate of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was hacked to death in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday, sparking violent protests by his supporters.
The murder of another TDP leader sparked strong protests by the main opposition party, which had demanded the resignation of Panchayat Minister Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy, who defeated Suryudu in the last elections.
Naidu alleged that more than 90 leaders and activists of the TDP were killed in Rayalaqseema since the Congress came to power in the state in May 2004, including the murder of TDP leader and former minister Paritala Ravi.

Five die in Indian police firing

Paritala Ravi
Paritala Ravi was killed in January
Five members of an opposition party have been killed and 20 others injured in police firing in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

A policeman was also killed in the shooting which occurred when a procession taken out by the opposition Telugu Desam party turned violent.

The incident took place in the state's Anantapur district.

The Telugu Desam was voted out of power in Andhra Pradesh in state elections held last year.

Trouble began when a Telugu Desam candidate, Paritala Sunita, was on her way to file nomination papers for by-elections to be held next month along with hundreds of her supporters.

On seeing policemen gathered near the local administrative office where Ms Sunita was to file her papers, Telugu Desam party members shouted slogans against them, pelted them with stones and attacked police vehicles.

They blamed the police for the murder of their leader and Ms Sunita's husband, Paritala Ravi, in January.

The police then opened fire to disperse the mob.

Inquiry

Correspondents say the situation in the area is tense and additional police reinforcements have been sent.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajashekhar Reddy, has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Mr Ravi, a controversial figure and a former Maoist rebel, was facing several criminal cases.

A senior Telugu Desam leader, he was killed in a bomb blast.
